History

Courses conducted since inception (1960) to 2013(till date) and Scope of starting Diploma , Mining Sirdar and Surveyor course with focus on Project Affected People (PAP) coming up from early N.C.D.C period i.e. 1960.It is situated at 20 KM west from Ramgarh Cantt and near Bhurkunda project.The institute has a glorious past of producing eminent Mining Engineers and a large number of technical hands for the industry.

The institute had different names at different periods:-

  • 1960-65 ,Mining Training School ,(MTS) ,
  • 1965-73 Mining Mechanisation Training Institute ,(MMTI)
  • 1973-77 Refresher Training Institute, (R.T.I.)
  • From 1977 ,Bhurkunda Technical Training Institute.(BTTI)

Phases in BTTI

First Phase(1977-82)

  • Date of Commencement : 02.05.1977
  • Course Conducted : Diploma in Mining and Mine Surveying (3 Yrs. Course)

Approval granted by State Board of Technical Education, Bihar only for three batches. The scheme automatically discontinued in 1982 .

Enrollment in the Diploma Course:

  • 1978-79 : 42
  • 1979-80 : 34
  • 1980-81 : 37
  • Total : 113

On completion of the academic course the enrolled employees were posted back to collieries as Production Chaser and were granted one/two increment.

During and till completion of the academic course no examination can be held by SBTE for grant of certificate. After long persuasion ,the final examination of Students of all the three batches were held together in 1984 at Dhanbad Polytechnique and subsequently they were granted Diploma certificate.

Second Phase(1988-96)

(A) Creation of skilled / semi skilled amongst those, appointed under Para 9.3.2, 9.4.0, Land loosers scheme.

The newly appointed persons as above were directly posted as Cat.I. trainee at BTTI.They were imparted following courses at BTTI :

1) Induction training for two months :It covers the subjects/syllabus of Matriculation standard in Maths, Science, Language and humanities and Mining.On completion of induction training they had to appear in the trade selection test before a competent committee to assess their aptitude and inclination towards the trade.

2) Theoretical and Practical Training for 15 months: Accordingly various trades were allotted, namely Surveyor, Electrical, Mechanical and other suitable trades as per need of the Company. Those who could not pass the test were given one more chance .If failed again they were sent back in the projects as Cat.I.Mazdoor. After allotment of trades trainees were imparted theoretical and practical training for 15 months.

  • Theoretical : 4 months
  • Practical : 6 months
  • Advance training: 5 months

At the end of 15 months training ,they had to go through written, practical and oral test in respective trades .Those who were declared successful were awarded with certificate , and that were treated equivalent to I.T.I. for the purpose of their career growth within the Company as approved by the board of Directors

  • Note: Under the scheme ,a good number of persons have been trained and still the institute is capable of continuing this training.

3)Surveyors Course

The surveyor`s trade are allotted under the above scheme to those having intermediate with Science and Mathematics .The trainees were given Survey training for two years covering the course similar to the syllabus of surveyorship examination conducted by D.G.M.S .

Over and above two years training in the mines, intensive theoretical training and practice with various survey instruments are also given to trainees at BTTI. On completion of surveyors training they are to appear a test conducted at BTTI in a stipulated manner to the standard of a surveyor so as to enabling them to work as Asstt. Surveyor.

On passing the written, practical and oral examination ,they are posted in the field as Asstt. Surveyor,(Unqualified),Gr.D. Subsequently these Asstt.Surveyors could appear and pass D.G.M.S Examination and serve as colliery surveyor (statutory capacity). 114 Number of Asstt. Surveyors have been posted in different projects of CCL .

(B) Coaching Programme for Electrician and Electric Supervisors (Short Course for 6/15 days).

In view of shortage of qualified Electricians in the Company, BTTI has started training programmes for Electricians and Electrical Supervisors . The potential candidates were given extensive training at BTTI to make them eligible for wireman’s permit examination conducted by West Bengal Licensing Board, (Electrical) at Durgapur,W.B.

In this process nearly 550 persons got Electrical license at different capacity and most of them have been given appropriate placement. Sufficient number of eligible candidates was prepared for appearing Electrical Supervisor ship examination by West Bengal Licensing Board, Kolkata and Asansol. In this course about 70 persons have obtained electrical supervisors license also . At present these examination are being conducted at this State by Jharkhand State Electrical Licensing Board .

Third Phase(1998- 2010) For SFVRS/Land Loosers/Existing TR Employees

1) Career Growth for SFVRS/Land Loosers posted at BTTI during 1999-2000 Course Module:

(i) Induction & Selection of candidate at BTTI :

  • Duration : one month (theoretical)
  • Selection : Written and oral examination is conducted by the competent committee to adjudge their aptitude and acceptability. If found suitable they are accepted as Mining Sirdar trainee/Surveyors.s Course/EPH/Cable man/Armature Winder.

The unsuccessful candidates however are given one more chance to pass the test.

Courses Offered were:

(A) Basic Course for Mining Sirdar.

Since October 98 the institute has started a training scheme for generation of Mining Sirdar out of existing manpower /Selected candidates amongst Land Loosers/SFVRS of the Company.

Details of the scheme are as under:-

(a) Eligibility:

  • Education: Matriculation or above.
  • Should be daily rated .
  • Age : within 19 to 30 years .
  • Should be medically fit to work in UG mine.
  • Different areas /projects of CCL selects suitable potential candidates or interested persons can also apply through proper channel for this course.

(b) Theoretical & Field Training :

  • Duration : Three and Half Years
  • Theoretical Trainig : Six Months (of one month duration each , twice in a year)
  • Practical Training : Three Years( one spell of six months and six times during entire training as per norms of DGMS to enable them to appear at the sirdarship examination.)
    On completion of stipulated period of training, they are sent back to their respective place of posting in the same capacity, where from they appear sirdarship examination till they pass.
    During three and half years of sirdarship course, intensive coaching is given for passing them First Aid, Gas testing examination which are essential to appear for sirdarship examination .About 107 have been completed this training and 40 persons have acquired sirdarship certificate .

(B)Surveyor Course :Duration 2 Years at BTTI.

(C)EPH/Face Crew :1 Year at BTTI.

(D)Armature Winder/Cableman :1 Year at CETI.

(2) Coaching programmes for Existing Employees (6 days)

In order to give opportunity towards career growth to the employees ,various coaching programmes are conducted from time to time to enable the aspiring candidates like to appear in the DGMS examination and other statutory examinations.

  • 2nd class Mine Managership written and oral examination.
  • Surveyorsship Written and oral examination
  • Overmanship Written and Oral Examination
  • Mining Sirdarship examination.
  • Gas Testing examination.
  • First Aid certificate examination.
  • Electrician licensing examination.

Fourth Phase (2011- till date)

(A) Basic Course for Mining Sirdar.

Since January 11 the institute has started a training scheme for generation of Mining Sirdar out of existing manpower of the Company.

Details of the scheme are as under:-

(a) Eligibility:

  • Education: Matriculation or above.
  • Should be daily rated .
  • Age : more than 18 years
  • Should be Medically fit to work in UG mine.
  • Different areas /projects of CCL forwards potential candidates. application to GM(HRD) for Aptitude Test Conducted in two sessions (January and July) each having provision for 40 candidates

(b) Course Module:

(i) Selection of candidate at HRD,CCL :

Aptitude Test is conducted by the competent committee to adjudge their aptitude and acceptability. If found suitable they are placed at BTTI for Training. During the entire period of training the candidate remains in the roll of parent project.

(ii) Theoretical & Field Training :

  • Duration : Three and Half Years
  • Theoretical Trainig : Six Months (of one month duration each, twice in a year)
  • Practical Training : Three Years( one spell of six months and six times during entire training as per norms of DGMS to enable them to appear at the sirdarship examination.) On completion of stipulated period of training, they are sent back to their respective place of posting in the same capacity, where from they appear sirdarship examination till they pass. During three and half years of sirdarship course, intensive coaching is given for passing them First Aid, Gas testing examination which are essential to appear for sirdarship examination .About 85 candidates are undergoing training under this scheme.

(B)Statutory Training for Supervisors :

(a)Structural Training for Front Line Supervisors :15 days

(b)Refresher Training for Workmen Inspectors and PSC Members : 06 days

(c)First Aid Training and Award of Certificate after Examination : 06 days

(C)Special Training and Coaching Classes for Career Development:

  • Monsoon Preparation : 06 days
  • Fire Fighting Training : 06 days
  • General Safety in UG and OC : 06 days
  • Coaching Classes for Gas Testing/Mining Sirdar/Overman Examination : 06 days
